The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released May 2023 Consumer Price Index (CPI) today. Highlights are as follows (all indexes are on a seasonally unadjusted basis):

  • All items increased 0.1% in the last month and rose 4.1% in the last twelve months
  • Food at home rose 0.1% from April and increased 5.8% since May 2022
  • Cereals + bakery products increased 0.1% in the last month and increased 10.7% in the last twelve months
  • Meats, poultry, fish + eggs decreased 0.9% since April and rose 0.3% from May 2022
  • Dairy + related products decreased by 0.6% in the last month and increased 4.6% in the last twelve months
  • Fruits + vegetables rose 1.4% from April and increased 2.7% since May 2022
  • Other foods rose 0.1% in the last month and increased 9.2% in the last twelve months
  • Gasoline (all types) decreased 1.4% since April and fell 19.7% from May 2022
  • All items, less food and energy, rose 0.4% in the last month and increased 5.5% in the last twelve months
  • Apparel decreased 0.3% from April and rose 3.5% since May 2022
  • New vehicles rose by 0.5% in the last month and decreased 1.6% in the last twelve months
  • Used cars + trucks rose 3.2% since April and fell 4.2% from May 2022
  • Motor vehicle parts + equipment saw no change in the last month and rose 4.2% in the last twelve months
  • Medical care commodities rose 0.6% from April and increased 4.4% since May 2022
  • Alcoholic beverages increased 0.3% in the last month and rose 3.9% in the last twelve months
  • Tobacco + smoking products rose 0.6 % since April and increased 6.3% from May 2022
  • Personal care products increased 1.0% in the lat month and rose 7.5% in the last twelve months
