The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released March 2023 Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) today. Highlights are as follows (all indexes are on a seasonally unadjusted basis):

  • All items increased 0.1% in the last month and rose 4.9% in the last twelve months
  • Food at home decreased 0.2% from February and rose 8.4% since March 2022
  • Cereals + bakery products rose 0.9% in the last month and increased 13.6% in the last twelve months
  • Meats, poultry, fish + eggs decreased 1.1% since February and rose 4.3% from March 2022
  • Dairy + related products decreased by .33% in the last month and increased 10.7% in the last twelve months
  • Fruits + vegetables decreased 1.6% from February and increased 2.5% since March 2022
  • Other foods rose 1.1% in the last month and increased 10.5% in the last twelve months
  • Energy commodities decreased 5.4% since February and increased 19.7% from March 2022
  • Gasoline (all types) rose by .97% in the last month and decreased by 17.4% in the last twelve months
  • Commodities, less food + energy, decreased 0.3% in the last month rose 6.6% in the last twelve months
  • Apparel rose .8% from February and increased 3.3% since March 2022
  • New vehicles increased 0.4% in the last month and rose 9.4% in the last twelve months
  • Used cars + trucks rose .9% since February and decreased 11.2% from March 2022
  • Motor vehicle parts + equipment rose .14% in the last month and increased 6.4% in the last twelve months
  • Medical care commodities rose .60% from February and rose 3.6% from March 2022
  • Alcoholic beverages decreased .05% in the last month and increased 3.9% in the last twelve months
  • Tobacco + smoking products rose 0.7% since February and increased 6.9% from March 2022
  • Personal care products increased 0.8% in the last month and rose 6.5% in the last twelve months
