The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released December 2023 Consumer Price Index (CPI) today. Highlights are as follows (all indexes are on a seasonally unadjusted basis):
- All items decreased 0.1% in the last month and increased 3.4% in the last twelve months
- Food at home fell 0.1% from November and increased 1.3% since December 2022
- Cereals + bakery products fell 0.7% in the last month and increased 2.6% in the last twelve months
- Meats, poultry, fish + eggs increased 0.1% since November and fell 0.1% from December 2022
- Dairy + related products rose 0.1% in the last month and decreased 1.3% in the last twelve months
- Fruits + vegetables decreased 0.1% from November and increased 0.3% since December 2022
- Other foods fell 0.2% in the last month and increased 0.3% in the last twelve months
- Gasoline (all types) fell 5.8% since November and decreased 1.9% from December 2022
- All items, less food and energy, rose 0.1% in the last month and increased 3.9% in the last twelve months
- Apparel fell 1.8% from November and rose by 1.0% since December 2022
- New vehicles decreased 0.2% in the last month and rose 1.0% in the last twelve months
- Used cars + trucks increased 0.1% since November and fell 1.3% from December 2022
- Motor vehicle parts + equipment rose by 0.3% in the last month and decreased 1.2% in the last twelve months
- Medical care commodities decreased 0.1% from November and increased 4.7% since December 2022
- Alcoholic beverages saw no change in the last month and increased 2.5% in the last twelve months
- Tobacco + smoking products fell 0.1% since November and increased 7.8% from December 2022
- Personal care products fell 1.1% in the lat month and rose 3.3% in the last twelve months
